Speeches of Shri Datta Swami In First World Parliament On Spirituality Part-6

41) Defective Beginning:-

Defective beginning is always justified and God also encourages the devotee without finding fault with the defect. But, to sit in the defect only throughout life is not justified. A child is given chocolates to go to school and the child is not criticized for its lack of interest in the school and for its interest for chocolates only. The defect is tolerated in view of its little age and huge ignorance in such age. But, as the child grows, the chocolates are withdrawn assuming that the grown-up child as young person must have developed interest in the learning and must have lost interest in chocolates. But, if the grown up young person going to college is still demanding chocolates to go to college and if he stops going to college in case the chocolates are not given to him, it must be concluded that he has interest in chocolates only and will never have interest in learning. The parents will stop the chocolates and don’t mind even if he doesn’t go to college. Similarly, God grants boons in the beginning to attract the devotee towards devotion. Of course, these boons are only his pre-matured fruits of good deeds drawn from future life cycles with decreased values. God arranges our life cycles by placing good and bad fruits alternatively so that the soul is really entertained without continuity of one type of fruits only. This truth is not known to the devotee, who thinks that the innocent God soaped by him through worship has given good fruits even though good deeds were not done by him. God expects that the devotee on tasting the sweet devotion, develops interest in devotion forgetting his desires. If the devotee desires benefits only throughout the time, after some time, God becomes silent neglecting him to his fate! The Gita says that all beginnings are defective, but, doesn’t say that you can sit on the beginning step only throughout your life! If you develop real devotion of God, God will take care of you here and there serving your requirement everywhere without matching the devotion and its fruit provided you never aspire for any fruit from Him. Thinking that you can get this facility through selfless devotion, you shall not start developing selfless devotion to God. If you do so, God will keep silent without taking care of you and one day you will ask God “why are you not caring about me, even though I followed the path of selfless devotion from a long time?”! You have forgotten that God is omniscient and knows everything even hidden in your minute nerve.

42) Sainthood:-

Sainthood means propagation of spiritual knowledge through discussions, debates and giving messages to the humanity to give right direction in Pravrutti (worldly life) as well as in Nivrutti (spiritual life). In the past, there was no proper conveyance to go from one place to the other and in such case, sticking to family in a house was not possible. In view of God’s work, certain blessed devotees used to sacrifice their stay with their families and sainthood was a shock to any family since the saint was leaving the family. Sainthood doesn’t mean wearing saffron cloth, which is just a symbol of maturity in knowledge, being the colour of a ripened fruit. Remember that Krishna wearing a silk cloth gave original text (the Gita) while Shankara wearing a saffron cloth wrote commentary on it! Today, the situation is totally different due to development of science by the grace of God to facilitate spiritual work. Computer is discovered by the blessing of God, through which the propagation of spiritual knowledge can be very effectively done while staying with family and avoiding journey to any place. The work done is important and not whether you do it in the office or in your home as we see in the IT field. Today, even part time work of God done is far far more than the full time work done in ancient days!

43) God Acts as Devotee:-

God acts as devotee even if He comes down as human incarnation and this brings God to mix with devotees easily without hurting their ego and jealousy by claiming Himself as incarnation. Krishna was performing all the divine rituals in the morning for the sake of others (loka samgraha). He revealed Himself as God only to Arjuna while preaching the Gita personally to him. Even Arjuna was not eligible to digest this concept and questioned Krishna about His preaching to Sun in the beginning of creation while He was born recently! Shirdi Sai Baba gave visions of several forms of God to devotees, but, always was telling that He is the servant of God (Allah Malik). Shri Paramahamsa gave vision to the owner of temple as divine mother and God Shiva, but, He was always worshipping the divine Mother as a devotee in Her temple. Through human form, God comes close to human devotees and by acting as devotee, He comes closer to the devotees without touching their inevitable ego and jealousy.

44) Divine Visions: -

Divine visions are not at all important before pleasing the God. The visions are given only in the basic level to eradicate the atheistic side of mind and to strengthen its theistic side. Devotees feel as if they have reached the climax of devotion by getting a vision and propagate about their lucky deservingness! The chief minister is going by a road and if you go there and see him, is it a great achievement? Even if you don’t see him, if you get your work done by him, it is a great achievement! Ravana saw Lord Shiva directly, but, was not blessed by Him in real sense since he met untimely death (God Shiva is famous to stop the untimely death.). Rama never saw God Shiva, but, was fully blessed by Him since He lived long by the blessings of God Shiva!

45) Soul is Inert Energy:-

Soul is inert energy generated from the digestion of food and becomes awareness (work of transfer of information from senses to brain), on entering and functioning in a specific nervous system. The awareness generated has two faces: one, the basic inert energy called as soul (Atman) and the other specific non-inert work called as individual soul (Jiiva). Atman and Jiiva are often confused one for the other and such confusion is not serious at all as far as the total picture of the soul is concerned. The Gita describes the soul as inert energy by saying that it is inert (Sthaanurachalah), pervading the entire world (Sarvagatah), maintaining the entire world (dhaaryate jagat) and not attached to deeds and fruits being inert (na lipyate). The Veda also says that it became this entire world (Sarvamaatmaivaabhuut). Even though the Atman is a drop of inert cosmic energy, it is taken as the entire cosmic energy due to qualitative similarity neglecting the quantitative difference. Even now, imaginable Atman is not the unimaginable God and it is only a tiny drop of cosmic energy-ocean and thus, is a part of creation (not the creator-God). All the above adjectives of Atman are true since the inert energy is generating, maintaining and dissolving the world by the will of God (hence, it is not God). This is the basis of confusion of Advaita philosophers, who try to become inert, keeping the inert energy as their goal-God! This is totally wrong way and the extreme part of this is Avadhuta to wander without clothes! Everybody shall be non-inert individual soul, which is a bundle of thoughts, to convert its nature (thoughts) from worldly side to divine side and do the service of God to get His grace. Avadhuta (who throws down) means the individual soul, who repels back the waves of worldly fascination like a hill without bending like a weak plant for the sake of God’s work. Why don’t you take Shankara Himself as the example, who did lot of propagation of spiritual knowledge as an individual soul and didn’t become a mad, inert and naked person as Atman? Confusion of one face of the soul to the other face is responsible for this wrong way. Both the faces are explained by the scripture just to give the total picture of the soul. In strict sense, soul (Atman) must be confined to the inert side and individual soul (Jiiva) must be confined to the non-inert side.

46) Ego Based Ambition for Credit:-

Ego based ambition for credit is human nature at every level, which shall be eradicated to please the ultimate God. Everybody spends most of the time in the presence of a fan based on a rod revolving circularly giving pleasant air. Everybody appreciates the fan for its merit and the praise is transferred by the fan to the current, which revolves the fan. The rod indicates ‘I’, which is the fan. The circular movements in the space indicate that the fan is replying every person appreciating it by saying “I am zero (circular motion), zero, zero...”. The credit given to it is passed on to the current, without which the fan can’t move even a little. Similarly, when somebody praises you about your merit, you shall pass it on to God, due to whom only that merit came to you. If the fan is producing harsh sounds, this defect must be owned by the fan and should not be passed on to the current. Similarly, you should own your defects and pass on your merit to the credit of God. Such behaviour expressed in every step of life pleases God very much. We are speaking reverse of this in every step of our life! Everybody should keep the fan as his/her spiritual preacher.

47) Special Knowledge:-

Special knowledge is said to be the God by the Veda and the Gita (Satyam Jnanaam..., Prajnaanam..., Jnaaniitvaatmaiva...), which means that God as incarnation is personified knowledge. Excess of a quality is termed as the possessor of that quality. The main aim of the human form of God is to preach special spiritual knowledge to the humanity. Hence, He is addressed as the knowledge itself, being the possessor of infinite spiritual knowledge. It is a misinterpretation to call the knowledge as mere awareness. Awareness is the basic material of knowledge just like gold is the basic material of the golden chain. If you call knowledge as mere awareness, you shall also call a golden chain as mere lump of gold. There is difference between awareness (lump of gold) and knowledge (golden chain). Sometimes, even a human being having developed awareness is scolded as an idiot having no knowledge. If you take knowledge as alternative word of awareness, we have to call even birds and animals as living beings having knowledge! The word used to indicate human form of God is Prajnaanam, meaning special knowledge, which is far higher than the knowledge of ordinary human beings. If you confine this special knowledge to mere awareness, you are confining the gold chain having lot of special design to mere lump of gold! Forgetting this, Advaita philosophers take awareness as God and thereby treat every living being having awareness as God.

48) God is Omnipotent and Omniscient:-

God is omnipotent and omniscient. We shall not ask God for everything since He is omnipotent. We shall ask Him to give us whatever is good for us since He is omniscient. You shall not ask Him lot of money and when it is given, due to wrong plan resulting from your little knowledge, you will lose it and weep for the loss with deep pain. Then, you are asking Him the reason for not protecting it, which is given by Him only. This is wrong procedure. You shall pray Him that whatever is to be protected by Him must be only given to you. This is correct procedure. We don’t know what we need and how much we need. We simply ask something, which is harmful to us and that too in huge quantity. We think that we are competent in selecting good things helping us and also think that we are capable of managing those things provided God grants those things desired by us. We become partners of God! One such fellow did penance for God. God appeared and this fellow asked God for a boon by which anything desired by him must materialize. God gave the boon and disappeared. He desired for a beautiful lady, who appeared. Then, he desired for several ornaments on her, which appeared. He doubted that whether she is the divine mother. She became the divine mother. Then, he doubted that whether she will kill him. She killed him! Hence, we shall have full control on our desires and do proper analysis of our desires before praying God for attaining the fulfilment of those desires as boons. The best way is to surrender to God with full devotion and without aspiration for any fruit from Him. In such state, God takes care of us here (Kshemaa) and there (Yoga).

49) Six Vices:-

Six vices are illegal sex (kaama), violence from hurting to killing (krodha), greediness for corruption (lobha), fascination (moha), ego (mada) and jealousy (maatsarya). The first three are the main gates of hell related to worldly life or Pravrutti as said in the Gita. The fifth and sixth are related to spiritual life or Nivrutti because due to these two, every soul hates the incarnation of God. The fourth is very strong love, which is common to the left side pravrutti as well as to the right side Nivrutti since very strong love can be either on the worldly bonds or on God. If the fascination is towards left side, the soul is bonded and if it is towards right side, the soul is liberated. It is just like saying that if the key is rotated to left, the lock is bonded and if rotated to right, the lock is liberated!

50) Illegal Sex (Kaama):-

Illegal sex (kaama) is one of the three main gates to hell. The intense interest in sex is not sinful provided it is legal and sin comes only when it is illegal. The speed of the train is not problematic as long as the train is on the track! The Gita says that legal sex is pious (dharmaaviruddhah...) irrespective of its intensity. The illegal sex in climax like raping is mainly reported on males and not on females. The reason is the ego of gender existing in males whereas submissiveness and fear exist in females. Hence, the egoistic nature of the soul must be controlled by it by feeling that even a soul having male body must be submissive and fearful feeling that God is the husband of all souls. The basic aim of sex is extension of humanity for the next generation in order to continue the world-drama for the continuous entertainment of God. Hence, legal sex is treated as a pious divine program as depicted by the statues on the walls of temples also.

51) Violence:-

Violence is the other main gate of hell, which starts from hurting and ending with killing of other living beings. Killing other soft living beings without any reason, just for food, is the climax of the sin and this is opposed by God, who came as Buddha and Mahaavir. God creates plenty of vegetable food for all living beings, which contains all the constituents required for good health. The re-synthesized proteins of the primary proteins obtained from plants in the body of a living being are also not good for health. Scripture says that non-violence is the climax of justice (ahimsaa paramo dharmah). Killing of demons by God, who harm the society and become irreparable, is not a sin. You can kill the opposite wild living beings, which will kill you if you don’t kill those. Even a sinner must not be killed without giving chance of rectification before doing the same sin for second time. After first sin, the sinner must be given an opportunity for reformation. Instead of killing the sinner, he can be imprisoned also lifelong to avoid the repetition of the sin in the society.

52) Greediness for Corruption:-

Greediness for corruption is the other main gate of hell. The sinful money earned always harms the issues by destroying them from all sides. Scripture says that the sinful money comes and takes away all the justified money also like an engine coming on the platform joins the chain of all the compartments already standing on the platform and takes it away (anyaayenaarjitam…). This sin is very strong since money is very strong item of the world. It is said to be the root of entire worldly bonds (Dhanamuulamidam jagat). Even the practical devotion to God is judged by the sacrifice of money as said by the Veda and the Gita. This is the reason that why sinful money destroys the issues also even though they are not involved in the earning of the corrupt money. The greediness increases with the growth of money and Jesus said that even a camel may pass through the eye of a needle, but, a rich person can’t get salvation. Jesus also told a rich person asking for salvation that he should first give all his money to deserving receivers and then come for getting salvation! Corruption is the cancer that spoils even the good spiritual health of the soul.
