Paṇḍitānāṃ Paṇḍitastvam,
Datta Pāmara Pāmaro'si ।। (pallavī)
O God Datta! You are the scholar among scholars and an illiterate among illiterates.
Tāpasānāṃ Veda vādī,
Gopikānāṃ veṇugītiḥ ।।
You are the preacher of the Holy Veda for the pious sages. You are the player of sweet songs on Your flute for the cowherd maids at Bṛndāvanam.
Devatānāṃ dhyānagamyaḥ,
Rāsakeli nāyako'si ।।
You are the goal of the meditation done by angels. At the same time, You are the hero of the midnight dance with the cowherd maids at Bṛndāvanam.
Manmathasya dāhakastvam,
Madyaveśyā lālaso'si ।।
You are the destroyer of Cupid, the deity of sex. You burnt Him to ashes by opening Your third eye. At the same time, You appear to be a mad person with a fascination for wine and prostitutes.
{God Datta appears to be a drunkard having a fascination for prostitutes in order to test the depth of the devotion of devotees. It also helps in driving away undeserving devotees from His circle.}
Navanidhīnāṃ eka dātā.
Nityabhikṣā yācako'si ।।
You alone can grant the nine types of treasures of wealth.
At the same time, every day, you beg for your own food.
