Swami answers questions of Shri Anil on Islam

O Learned and Devoted Servants of God

1. Please give the essence of the following verses from Quran and Hadith.

[Shri Anil asked: Paadanamaskaaram Swami, I request You to give the essence of the following verses from Quran and Hadith. At Your Divine Lotus Feet-anil.

"And We did not create the heavens and earth and that between them in play. We did not create them except in truth, but most of them do not know."[Quran 44:38-39]

Swami replied:- The creator of the entire creation is God only and not anybody, who is a part of the creation. The creator is the unmediated unimaginable God called Parabrahman.

[Shri Anil: “If the sea were ink for [writing] the words of my Lord, the sea would be exhausted before the words of my Lord were exhausted, even if We brought the like of it as a supplement.”[Quran 18:109]

Swami replied:- The spiritual knowledge spoken by God is infinite as per the Veda (Satyaṃ Jñānamanantaṃ Brahma).

Swami

[Shri Anil: "And they ask you, [O Muhammad], about the soul. Say, 'The soul is of the affair of my Lord. And mankind have not been given of knowledge except a little.'"[Quran 17:85]]

Swami replied:- The soul is said to be the possessor of a little knowledge. Actually, the soul is a part of the inert cosmic energy and the inert cosmic energy appears to be creating, maintaining and destroying the creation like God. Actually, God created the inert energy (Tattejo' sṛjata) as the first item. The creation is taking place by the non-inert God through His first creation, which is the inert energy. Actually, the unseen God is the creator, maintainer and destroyer of the world like a pot-maker. If the pot-maker is not seen, you will think that the mud is the creator, maintainer and destroyer of the pot. The soul or cosmic energy differs from God in not having awareness and omnipotency. The soul (actually inert energy) is the cause of awareness and hence, is loosely called as awareness. The mud pot can be called as mud. The soul loosely called as individual soul receives knowledge and hence, appears to closely resemble God.

[Shri Anil: "And We created for you the seven heavens one above the other, and We have not made any of the heavens to be without a guardian."[Quran 71:15]]

Swami replied:- The seven heavens represent the seven upper worlds. Each upper world has a ruler.

[Shri Anil: We built the universe with great might, and We are certainly expanding it.[Quran 51:47]]

Swami replied:- The human beings have certainly developed the universe with the help of science i.e., given by God.

[Shri Anil: Allah is the Light of the heavens and the earth. His light is like a niche in which there is a lamp, the lamp is in a crystal, the crystal is like a shining star, lit from ˹the oil of˺ a blessed olive tree, ˹located˺ neither to the east nor the west, whose oil would almost glow, even without being touched by fire. Light upon light! Allah guides whoever He wills to His light. And Allah sets forth parables for humanity. For Allah has ˹perfect˺ knowledge of all things.[Quran 24:35]

Swami replied:- The light here means the awareness created by God, which is only a special work form of inert energy existing in the functioning nervous system and that inert energy is generated from the digested food in the stomach. But, God Himself is the true light, which performs all the actions of awareness through His omnipotence without being the awareness that is generated from food. God being omniscient enlightens the awareness of souls with His excellent spiritual knowledge. This worldly awareness is in every human being and the human being having the spiritual knowledge (Light) shines like a star.

[Shri Anil: It is Allah Who calls back the souls of people upon their death as well as the souls of the living during their sleep. Then He keeps those for whom He has ordained death, and releases the others until their appointed time. Surely in this are signs for people who reflect.[Quran 39:42]

Swami replied:- As per the instructions given by God, the date of death is fixed. The human being having sanctioned awareness alone will rise from the sleep (coma state).

[Shri Anil: "And to Allah belongs the east and the west. So wherever you might turn, there is the Face of Allah. Indeed, Allah is all-Encompassing and Knowing."[Quran 2:115]

Swami replied:- God is omniscient and hence, He knows everything done by every soul.

[Shri Anil: "His command is only when He intends a thing that He says to it, 'Be,' and it is."[Quran 36:82]

Swami replied:- When God says something to be, that something will be materialized and exists. Actually, that something materializes simultaneously as the word ‘Be’ is spoken by God indicating that this materialized creation is just the will of God (Icchāmātram…).

[Shri Anil: "And the moon - We have determined for it phases, until it returns appearing like the old date stalk."[Quran 36:39]

Swami replied:- Just like the old date stalk appears, the moon reappears again and again in different phases of size. God has given light to the sun, provided the moon with a reflected light and established path for them.

[Shri Anil: "He who created death and life to test you as to which of you is best in deed - and He is the Exalted in Might, the Forgiving."[Quran 67:2]

Swami replied:- The death clearly shows that no soul carries anything from here along with it. If this knowledge is understood well, one will not accumulate wealth through injustice. At least, if the human being realizes this truth on some day and changes in future, the sinful past of such soul is forgiven by God.

[Shri Anil: "And it is He who has released[simultaneously] the two seas, one fresh and sweet and one salty and bitter, and He placed between them a barrier and prohibiting partition."[Quran 25:53]

Swami replied:- God clearly distinguished good and bad with a clear barrier between them, which is prohibiting the soul to travel from good to bad saying that hell is the result of bad.

[Shri Anil: "Indeed, Allah will not change the condition of a people until they change what is in themselves."[Quran 13:11]

Swami replied:- The external wealth or poverty depends upon your internal mental setup. Unless your present mental setup changes, God will not change your external condition.

[Shri Anil: "Know that the life of this world is but amusement and diversion and adornment and boasting to one another and competition in increase of wealth and children - like the example of a rain whose resulting plant growth pleases the tillers; then it dries and you see it turned yellow; then it becomes scattered debris."[Quran 57:20]

Swami replied:- The birth, growth and death of your external wealth takes place from time to time. If that causes corresponding changes in your mind, it means that you are just a slave of your external wealth.

[Shri Anil: "Verily, the creation of each one of you is brought together in his mother's womb for forty days in the form of a nutfah (mixed drops of male and female discharge), then he becomes an 'alaqah (a piece of thick coagulated blood) for a similar period, then a mudghah (a piece of flesh) for a similar period. Then Allah sends an angel who is ordered to write four things: his provision, his life span, his deeds, and whether he will be wretched or blessed. Then the soul is breathed into him."[Sahih Muslim, Book 33, Hadith 6390]

Swami replied:- The formation of fertilized ovum in the womb of mother is explained here. As per the nature of the three qualities of the soul, the fate of the soul is written on the forehead of the soul by God.

[Shri Anil: "Allah descends to the lowest heaven every night when the last third of the night remains and says: 'Who is calling upon Me that I may answer him? Who is asking of Me that I may give him? Who is seeking My forgiveness that I may forgive him?'"[Sahih al-Bukhari, Volume 2, Book 21, Hadith 246]

Swami replied:- This shows that God is anxious about His devotees to help them without damaging the justice. But, the souls always want His help even at the cost of breakage of justice.

[Shri Anil: "His veil is light. If He were to remove it, the splendor of His Face would burn His creation as far as His sight reaches."[ Sahih Muslim, Book 1 (The Book of Faith), Hadith 293]

Swami replied:- God is covered by light – this means that He is always associated with the best of three qualities, which is called Sattvam. The Gita says that a divine light covers the body when the good quality called Sattvam increases in a human being (Prakāśa upajāyate). Sattvam is a worldly quality acting like the mask or medium. This means that God is mediated so that He can be easily seen and worshipped by devotees. If God removes the medium and becomes unmediated God, no soul can even imagine Him. This medium of light of the first mediated God exists in two layers (when He appears before human beings). The external layer contains mild light in visible medium, which is bearable by souls since God looks like a bright person in this world. Here, the word ‘veil’ refers to this external layer of light. If this external layer is removed, the internal layer of the mask, which is the powerful ultraviolet light will burn the world. This point is well explained in the Gita, which says that His original light is equal to the light of a thousand Suns (Bhāsastasya mahātmanaḥ). This means that the original energetic body of the first energetic incarnation (called God Datta or Father of Heaven or Allah) can’t be seen by the human world, which can be seen only by the upper worlds containing energetic beings or angels. When the first energetic incarnation comes to the human world as human incarnation in materialized human body, His original energetic body is masked by the materialized human body. The light of the original body is masked by the solidified body through which this original light transmits out to a very little extent so that the original light of the first energetic incarnation is masked for the safety of the human world. When the first energetic incarnation appears to a human devotee, His original light is masked by a dim light called as the external layer. This is how a human being sees the first energetic incarnation if God wishes to show Himself as the first energetic incarnation (The energetic incarnation or even an energetic being develops a dim layer of external light so that human beings can see them.).

[Shri Anil: "When a person is placed in his grave and his companions depart - and he can hear the sound of their footsteps - two angels come to him, make him sit up, and ask him: 'What did you used to say about this man, Muhammad?' The believer will say: 'I testify that he is the slave of Allah and His Messenger.' It will be said to him: 'Look at your place in the Fire; Allah has replaced it with a place in Paradise.”[Sahih al-Bukhari, Volume 2, Book 23, Hadith 456]

Swami replied:- This confirms that the human incarnation is also a slave cum messenger of God. Of course, there are slaves and messengers of God also, who just carry the message of God as it is, doing the service of a postman. The human incarnation also does the same work, but an additional work of giving complete clarification of the message is done by the human incarnation because it is the very God coming in the medium of the selected human devotee. Prophet Himself being human incarnation, mixed the human incarnation with the slave-messengers because just before His arrival, the human incarnation was horribly crucified by the devotees suffering with excess of ego based jealousy. Jesus, the preceding preacher was received well as long as He claimed Himself as a slave-messenger. Once, when He declared Himself to be the Son of God and the God Himself, the priests couldn’t tolerate and got Him crucified. In fact, slave-messenger (Dvaitam or dualism), part of God (Vishishtaadvaitam or qualified monism) and becoming God as incarnation (Advaitam or Monism) are the three gradual steps in the spiritual journey. But, Prophet Mohammad wanted to save the life of the human incarnation from the cruel hands of jealous devotees and hence, He eradicated the other two latter steps by confining only to the first step.

[Shri Anil: "The Prophet kissed the Black Stone and said, 'By Him in Whose Hand is my soul, on the Day of Judgment, the Black Stone will be brought as a witness for those who touched it.'"[Sahih al-Bukhari, Volume 2, Book 26, Hadith 667]

Swami replied:- The witness of a miracle is very important since it propagates faith and devotion very strongly and quickly in the minds of public. Some devotees hide the miracles shown by God to them fearing that the public may misunderstand them as boasting themselves. In propagating God to the public, self should not be given any importance because the propagation of God is the most important.

[Shri Anil: "The most beloved deeds to Allah are those which are done regularly, even if they are small."[Sahih al-Bukhari, Volume 1, Book 2, Hadith 28]]

Swami replied:- Continuity of any devotional action is very important, which is more than the quantitative or qualitative aspect of  devotion.
