THE TRUE ESSENCE OF YOGA

Posted on: 19/11/2003

Imaginary Chakras and Lotus flowers: Yoga is the most prestigious field of spirituality. People think that there are six wheels (chakras) or lotus flowers present in the spinal cord, which are not seen by the eyes. [Actually] the wheels are imaginary and so the term ‘wheel’ must carry some inner meaning. When you say someone’s face is the moon itself [metaphorically], only fools search for the moon in that face. But wise people see the similarity between...

FORTUNATE UNION WITH GOD IS NIVRUTTI

Posted on: 18/12/2015

Shri P V N M Sarma asked: what is meant by Dhyana or meditation?

Shri Swami Replied: Meditation is the seventh step in the Yoga, which was divided in to eight steps. First of all, you must know the meaning of Yoga. Otherwise, the basic foundation is lost. Yoga means the fortunate union. Dhana yoga means to have fortunate union with wealth. Putra Yoga means the fortunate union with issues. Kalatra Yoga means the fortunate union to get wife through marriage. All these are related to Pravrutti...

MISUNDERSTOOD INTERPRETATIONS IN HINDUISM

Posted on: 29/12/2015

Dr. Nikhil asked: What are the various main misunderstood interpretations in Hinduism?

Shri Swami replied: 1) Unimaginable God: a) This is a misunderstanding in all the religions including Hinduism. This space, which is subtle energy, is infinite. This infinity is not the absolute inherent characteristic of the space. It means that the space is not infinite by itself. The space is generated from the unimaginable God. If you reach the boundary of the space, you touch God like...

What is the place of meditation in spiritual life?

Posted on: 06/09/2020

[Mr. Martin asked: Sri Datta Swami, Praṇāms. Every time I sit for meditation or bhajans almost immediately the area between my eyebrows slightly above on forehead there is a high intensity radiating energy feeling. When in group bhajans I would not lead a bhajan as the intensity is too much. The feeling is not out of control just very intense. This has been going on for twenty-five years. I don’t concentrate on the intensity, but just am aware of it. What place does meditation have in a devotee’s spiritual life? Should I continue meditation? Thank you, Praṇāms, Martin]

Swami replied: Meditation means concentration on the personality of God alone, neglecting the concentration on other personalities, other subjects and other things. Such meditation should come naturally, without any force. Sometimes, forced meditation is also done by people to fulfil certain aspirations. Meditation is nothing but interest (śraddhā), which should be without any aspiration in return. Such interest alone is natural...

What is the highest form of meditation?

Posted on: 18/06/2024

Smt. Chhanda asked: Swami Vivekananda commented: “The highest meditation is to think of nothing. If you can remain one moment without thought, great power will come.” But Swami, in highest meditation, only the thought of pure awareness remains. Is it not? Is it possible to think of nothing then? Please comment on the real meaning of this statement.

Swami replied:- Nothing refers to the absence of the circle of worldly thoughts. It denotes the purity of mind. The purity of mind is experienced by the awareness along with the absence of worldly thoughts...

STRESS RELIEF WORKSHOPS

Posted on: 28/09/2006

The present spiritual preachers who are conducting workshops on the relief of stress are just doctors and psychiatrists only. They preach Asanas (physical exercises) and pranayama (breathing exercises) which are the measures for the physical health. The preaching of Atma Yoga which is the dissolution of thought limiting to awareness is done under the headline of meditation. Meditation is a pious word used to limit yourself to the thought of God only forgetting all the other thoughts including the awareness of your awareness. I do not know how you are calling these as spiritual preachers and concentration on self as meditation...

BUDDHA STRESSED ON MAIN ASPECT OF JOURNEY KEEPING ASIDE GOAL

Posted on: 10/04/2016

Shri Pavan asked: I heard some scholars saying that Buddha mentioned in the list of incarnations as per Bhagavatam is totally different from the present Gautama Buddha, whom we are referring as Buddha. Can you please clear this point?

Shri Swami replied: After the incarnation of Krishna, the Dwapara age ended and a few years only passed over since Kali age started. In this short span of time there is no necessity of establishing a separate Buddha apart from this Gautama Buddha. Of course, there are two reasons for such misunderstanding of our scholars: Gautama Buddha negated God as an atheist and...

God Happy to Grant Anything Except Love to Him

Posted on: 09/09/2017

Dr. Nikhil asked: I understand that the essence of Spiritual knowledge is practical philosophy or Karma Yoga. Please bless me to become efficient in this practical line in the service of God.

Swami replied: Theory of spiritual knowledge is the most important fundamental step since it is the mother of practice. Fundamental care should be always on theory. If this spiritual knowledge is perfectly true without caring for pleasing the audience with the aim of getting petty materialistic benefits based on selfishness, the truth of the knowledge generates emotion or power in the mind that helps the soul to implement the knowledge...

ATMA YOGA AND BRAHMA YOGA

Posted on: 27/09/2006

[A devotee (Sai) from Pune asked Swami for the stress relief. Swami replied like this:]

The stress is developed whenever a problem causing misery arises. Today the spiritual preachers are stressing very much on this topic and are conducting workshops. There is a lot of response from the public. Every human being is very anxious about the solution of the problem and to get rid off the misery. This natural instinct is the reason for this big response, which is misunderstood as self-greatness by these preachers. Even the priests and astrologers are earning money exploiting this natural instinct. The desire for money and fame in the public is the main cause for the concentration on this topic by the preachers...
