(Poem of Lord Shri Krishna)

Panchama Dalam – Fifth Leaf

1) Sahasrashiirshashayanaat, sahasradalalochanah,

Sahasrashiirshah purushah, saakshaadavataratyaho!

[The thousand headed Lord (God is told as many headed personality by the Veda – sahasrashiirshaa purushah), Who is having thousand petaled lotus flowers like eyes is getting down from His bed of thousand headed Lord of serpents to incarnate Himself as Lord Krishna!]

2) Niilabaale dharaalole, devaniilaalakaa divi,

Vyatyaasaat niilameghashcha, nanruturniilabarhinah!

[As the blue boy plays on the earth, the heavenly dancers with blue locks of hair on foreheads danced in the sky. This picture is compensated in reverse in this rainy season, when the blue cloud is playing on the sky, the peacock birds danced with their blue feathers on the earth! (Krishna is born in the rainy season and in the same season the peacocks dance seeing the blue clouds.)]

3) Tulasiidaladaama kanthadeshe,

Makutaantasphuradekachaarubarham,

Vasanam kanakaamshu, paanivenuh,

Tava soundaryavilaasadiipavantah!

[The garland of Tulasi leaves around the neck, the peacock feather on the top of the crown, the silk cloth worn shining with golden threads and the flute in the hand are the lights that exhibit the styles of Your unimaginable beauty!]

4) Ambhoraashipralayachatulakshobhakallolabhinne,

Brahmaandepi sthiracharabhare kriidayaa chaalitaangah,

Koyam baalah plutavatadale kaandapatraashrayasya,

Vaataaloladdalakuvalayashriinidherekachorah?

[In the final dissolution, the entire world consisting of movable and immovable items is scattering into pieces with the horrible waves of oceans moving with terrible sounds! In this frightening atmosphere, who is this blue boy lying on the vibrating banyan leaf, playing Himself by moving the limbs of His body? This blue boy lying on the banyan leaf looks like a thief stealing the beauty of a moving blue lotus flower lying on its basic vibrating leaf!]

5) Jyotishchakram sphulingabhramanamavataratyantarikshaat kimetat?

Kasmaadaashaavakaasheshvatati patutarasshrunkhalaashankharaavah?

Nrutyantyevam kutah khe tridashayuvatayah pushpavarsham kirantyah?

Kaaragaaram cha garbham pravishati bhagavaan mokshadevopi bandham!

[When the Lord of salvation is entering the jail (in Mathura city) and the womb jail of mother Devaki to be bound by worldly bonds, following questions rose in the angels – i) What is this rotating wheel of lights throwing bright sparks on all sides, which is descending from the sky towards this earth? ii) Why these conch shells are blown so loudly in all the sides of this world? iii) Why these young heavenly dancers are dancing in this sky while throwing flowers like rain from their hands downwards?]

6) Ardharaatrisamaye tamogune,

Raajabandhanagruhe rajogune,

Devakiisukrutasattvadauhrudaat,

Jaayate trigunamaayipuurushah!

[In the midnight indicating tamas quality, in the jail present in the palace of the king, the rajas quality, from the auspicious womb of mother Devaki, the sattvam quality, the personality having maaya (illusionary power) constituted by these three qualities is born! (God is said to be possessor of maaya in the Gita – Maayinaam tu Maheshwaram.)]

7) Godaanabhuudaanahiranyadaanaih,

Nadiim mrutaa vaitaraniim tarantu,

Krishnasya naamaksharayoh prabhaavaat,

Jiivan bhavaambhodhimaham taraami!

[Let the people after death cross the river of puss and blood called as Vaitarani, flowing before the hell due to their donations of cow, land and gold done to deserving people during their lifetime. See My case! I am crossing this worldly ocean now itself, while alive, by the miraculous power of two letters present in the name Krishna!]

8) Lalitaalakalolavaliimukulam,

Vilasattulasiidaladaamagalam,

Nirayaarirayoparamaaya jaye,

Yadunaayakasaayakamaanaya me.

[In order to suppress the speed of the enemy called hell and to get victory over it, bring My arrow called as Krishna, who is having flower buds in the vibrating tender hair locks on the forehead and Who is having the garland of Tulasi leaves around the neck.]

9) Chintaa kutaha paantha! Kimu prayuktam,

Naakarnitam karnaripoh krute yat,

Moktum mahapaapachayaadapi tvaam,

Ekah samarthohamitiiha vaakyam?

[O passenger soul! Why are you worried? Did you not hear the statement of Lord Krishna said for the sake of the enemy of Karna (Arjuna)? That statement is “I am the only capable personality to relieve you from all the most intensive sins” (sarvadharmaan… mokshayishyaami... Gita)]

10) Brahmabhuutaah suraassantu, siddhashchaanye sahasrashah,

Aham Brahmavadohyeko, vishwaruupapradarshakah.

[Let there be several deities and several salvated souls. Only Lord Krishna showed the cosmic vision by which He is seen as creating, maintaining and dissolving it after sometime when the vision ended. He told throughout the Gita that He is the God. He alone proved what He said (God is characterised by the creation, maintenance and dissolution of the world as said in the Veda.).]

11) Pashya chaanuurayuddhaaya, samvyaanakatibandhanam,

Shrungaaranavaniitam vaa, taptam viiraghrutaayitam.

[See! Krishna, Who is ready by tightly binding the upper garment around His waist, for boxing with the boxer called as Chaanura. It looks like the romantic butter is heated to become the valour ghee!]

12) Kalayaami piitapatasaayadiidhitim,

Navaniitapindakarachandramandalam,

Muhurudyadaahasitavidyudujjvalam,

NabhasiprapannabhavaKrishnavaaridam.

[Krishna has taken birth in nabhasi (in the month of Shravana of rainy season). The cloud also takes birth in nabhasi (in the sky since nabhasi means both in Shravana month and in sky). Krishna is showing bright white smile now and then. The cloud is also showing lightening now and then. Krishna is having a ball of butter in His hand. The cloud also has full moon with it. Krishna is wearing a gold coloured cloth. The cloud also is having the gold coloured light due to sunset (In sunset only, moon appears on the cloud.). I am seeing Krishna completely as the evening cloud.]

13) Govardhanoddharanakaaliyamardanaabhyaam,

Praaptena kim nu yashasaa muditosi Krishna!

Uddhrutya maam mama cha mardaya darpabhaavam,

Pashchaat jagattrayavishishtatayaasi geyah.

[Oh Krishna! Are You pleased again and again by remembering Your fame obtained by You due to lifting up Govardhana hill and due to grinding the ego of the Kaliya serpent? If You uplift Me and grind My ego, Your fame will be sung specially in all the three worlds (It means that nobody can lift Me up from this worldly ocean and that nobody can suppress My strongest ego.).]

14) Muktaabarhakiriitamoulikamalashriilochanaalokanam,

Darbhollekhitakunkumaankatilakam chakraamshubimbojjvalam,

Svarnacchaayadukuuladhaari tulasiidaamasphuratsaurabham,

Kimchidvenumadhusvanam mama puro nityam maho nrutyati!

[One special blue light (Krishna) is always dancing before Me, which is wearing peacock feather on the golden crown decorated with pearls, which is having looks from two lotus flowers like eyes, which is having a straight line of red kumkum powder drawn on forehead with the help of the stem of grass, which is wearing very bright wheel rotating around the finger of hand, which is wearing gold coloured silk cloth, which is having attractive fragrance from the garland of Tulasi leaves around neck and which is singing on flute in mild sweet tone.]

15) Naaham bhavaaniva nagoddharane samarthah,

Tvat jaarachouryagunakarmani tu pravruttah,

Saadhyakriyaanusaranamkrutamamshahetoh,

Taata! Prasiida mayi baalakaliilayeva.

[I want to follow You very sincerely in Your every foot step. But, I can follow You only in the activities, which are possible to Me and I can’t follow Your activities, which are impossible to Me. You told in the Gita that the soul is a part of Yourself (mamaivaamsho… jiivabhuutah…). Hence, a part can’t do the work, which is done by the whole. Therefore, I can do the stealing and dancing with ladies as You have done since they are possible for Me. I can’t lift up the Govardhana hill, which is impossible for Me. Oh Father! Be pleased with My logic present in these arguments like a father getting pleased with some nonsense talked by his child.]

16) Nivedayantii te sviiye, punyapaape payovishe,

Mumuche puutanaa puutaa, tvayyevaantyasthirekshanaa.

[The Veda says that the soul gets salvation in the end by concentrating its constant look on God and leaving both good and bad deeds (Ubhe punyapaape vidhuuya). The demon Puutana also got salvation since she was concentrating her look on You in the last minutes of death. She has also surrendered both milk (good deeds) and poison (bad deeds) to You only!]

17) Kamso hamsapadam jagaama bhavataa daityah khalo maaritah,

Shlaaghyo devanadiisutopi na tathaa muktopi yatne krute,

Aasyopasthitabhojanaadiva bhavatpaanikshaterbhaagyatah,

Krishtah Krishna! Narena shaasvatamaham viddho jitasshtrunaa.

[When Krishna was running to kill Bhishma, Arjuna stopped Him and dragged Him back. Bhishma is speaking to Krishna in the following way – “Even demon Kamsa went to the state of salvation when he was killed by You. This Bhishma is not demon like Kamsa and is pure. Moreover, this Bhishma tried his level best by wounding You with arrows and by making You to run against me to kill me with Your hands so that I can also get salvation. This bloody Arjuna is my real enemy, who dragged You back from this fortune like taking away the plate of meals served from a hungry person ready to eat it. I am really beaten and defeated by Arjuna forever”.]

18) Tathaa jajne gavaam kshiiram, gopule tava janmanaa,

Yathaa tvaamanvagaadeva, kshiiraabdhirapi tattvatah.

[On Your birthday, the cows gave such huge quantity of milk in the village of cowherds, by which, it looked so, that the milk-ocean associated with You also came down to the earth along with You unable to stay leaving You! (God Vishnu lies on the milk-ocean, Who is incarnated as Krishna on the earth.)]

19) Praakkarma cha phalam pashchaat, nruunaam tvam tu vilakshanah,

Kaaraagaare purah pashchaat, navaniitasya taskarah.

[Generally, the deed is done before its fruit is received. You are a special contradiction to this general rule. You are born and appeared in the jail first and then only You did the stealing of butter. Generally, stealing is done first and then jailing is done as punishment afterwards in the case of all the souls. But, God Krishna is special being reverse to this general rule. (This means God is beyond souls, which are parts of creation and creator is beyond creation.)]

20) Ehi gopiimanashchora! Bhaktipaashaih samantatah,

Charanti yoginashchannah, tvaam baddhumanisham bhataah.

[Oh thief of the minds of Gopikas! Come. The sages in the form of Gopikas are wandering everywhere like police hidden in different civil dress to arrest You by tying You with the love-ropes! (When the thief is escaping cleverly, the police will wander everywhere to arrest him hiding themselves in different civil dress. Similarly, the sages in different forms as Gopikas are wandering to arrest You since You have stolen their minds by Your frequent cleverly escapes.)]

21) Mugdhe! rase taamarasaih kimebhih?

Kimindire! Chandanadhaarayaa vaa?

Raadhaaviyogasmrutidhaarayaiva,

Taamyatyayam taamarasaayataakshah.

[Oh innocent Goddess Lakshmi (Rukmini)! You don’t know the clue of romance. The heat and pain of this Krishna will not be pacified by these lotus flowers and stream of sandal water applied to His body. This lotus flower eyed Lord is suffering with the stream of memories of Radha in her separation (Radha alone can pacify Him.).]

22)Chestashchora! bhavatpadagrahagunaih sattvaadhikaissarvatah,

Sadbhaktairanisham bhatairiva bhavaan bandhaaya chaanvishyate,

Asmatchetasi vaasamaashraya Hare! Kshemaaya yanmaam khalam,

Pashyanto nabhavediheti sahasaa maam varjayantyeva te.

[Oh thief of minds! Your true devotees are like police, who are always searching for You everywhere to arrest You by tying You with their good qualities like strong ropes (Guna means good quality and rope. Sattva means good quality and the same word means strong in the case of rope.). Oh Hari! The best place for You to hide is My mind. These devotees will not search Me by thinking that God will not stay in this bad fellow and go away without searching Me.]

23) Badhvaa svagehe navaniitachoram,

Tameva maatussavidhe vilokya,

Naabudhyata staanavashaat prayuktam,

Arthaantaram shabdamivaanabhijnaa.

[A Gopika bound Krishna in her house after catching Him while stealing butter in her house. She went to the house of Yashoda, the mother of Krishna, so that she can bring her and show the bound Krishna in her house. She was shocked with ignorance on seeing the same Krishna along with Yashoda in her house. She was like an ignorant person, who knows one meaning only in which the word is used in one place and does not know the second meaning of a word when it is used in a different place. (A word can have two meanings like the same Krishna existing in two houses. A person will be shocked when a word with the second unknown meaning is used in a different context. Similarly, Gopika knows Krishna bound in her house like the first meaning of the word. She was shocked to see the same Krishna present bound in her house and the same Krishna in the house of Yashoda like a person shocked to see the same word used with two different meanings in two different contexts while he knows only one meaning for that word used in one context. The person will get confused to see the same word in different context with different unknown meaning.)]

24) He Gopikaah! nanu mrushaa bhavaduktamasmat,

Buddherapi sphurati cha prasuvosya naiva,

Kshiiraarnavaat kimavatiirya payoghataaya,

Nisshrenikaavrajashishuvrajamaaruroha?

[Oh Gopikas! Your report about Krishna that He has stolen the milk kept in pot in your house looks utter false not only to the mother of Krishna, but also to Me (poet). Can I believe that the Lord came down leaving the ocean of milk on which He was lying to steal this petty little milk present in your pot? Shall I also believe that for doing this meaningless theft, He climbed the ladder of the cowherd boys sitting one above the other?]

25) Bho! Bho! Gopyah! Kshiirachorohyapuurvah,

Praaptohaasairmohayan dhaavati sma,

Vidyudvegaastam jhatityeva baddhvaa,

Netradvandvam tatkshanam miilayantu.

[Oh Gopikas! Listen one important announcement. This thief (Krishna) of milk is adopting a very special method of stealing the milk. When you find Him while stealing the milk, He will look at you with a beautiful smile. By that smile, you are becoming fascinated and unconscious. In this time, this thief is running away! We are suggesting the way to catch Him. As soon as you see Him while stealing the milk, you catch Him with lightning speed and immediately close your eyes to avoid looking His miraculous smile.]

26) Paapapunyavivekaaya, kutoyam shastravistarah?

Hareh kopakaram paapam, punyam tasya priyapradam.

[Oh Sages! Why you have written so many ethical scriptures to decide which is bad and which is good? I will tell this entire subject in one sentence. That which makes Hari (Krishna) furious is bad sin and that which pleases Him is good deed.]

27) Prasannabrundaavanamadhyashobhine,

Vibhinna niilaamshubhirujjvalatvishe,

Madhuprapphullaaya madhusmitaaya te.

Madhuukapushpaaya madhudvishe namah.

[My salutation to the enemy of the demon called as Madhu (Krishna), who is like the blue flower of Madhuuka plant, which is blossoming in spring season (madhu) having smile like nectar (madhu) and is shining with bright blue radiations situated in the centre of the peaceful Brundavanam garden.]

28) Tvadiiyapadanartanavyadhitabhogapaariplavo—

Pyadrushyata sa kaaliyah phanipatissaroviichishu,

Prabhaataralavisphuradvishaghanendraniilojjvalat—

Phanaavalliriva svayam natanatatparo durmadah!

[The Kaliya serpent in the waves of the lake is moving in all sides with pain created by the beatings of Your feet in Your dance. You (blue Krishna) appeared as the moving blue diamond formed by the condensation of poison on the head of the Kaliya serpent. Finally, the scene appeared in such a way so as to think that proud Kaliya serpent was dancing by himself with his own blue diamond moving on the head!]
